Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an integral part of pharmacy education programme, as it covers several aspects of new drug discovery and development in collaboration with the other four departments of the institute. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Aditya Pharmacy College has undergraduate laboratories. The laboratories are designed and equipped with several state of the art technologies including central ventilation system and very sophisticated fume hoods attached with vacuum and water supply. The laboratories are spacious and ventilated having adequate space for students to carry out experimental work smoothly. In the research laboratory we have various instruments essential for routine smooth conduct of the experiments.


Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a stimulating discipline which links many scientific disciplines and allows for collaboration with researchers from other disciplines like biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, theoretical chemists, microbiologists, and bio-pharmacists in developing new drugs. One can place himself/herself in a competitive position by having strong background in organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.


The subjects covered, as a part of undergraduate teaching, are Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Inorganic and Nuclear Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. Pharmaceutical Chemistry involves the study of the physicochemical properties of Chemical Substances, Types of Intermolecular Interactions and Radioactivity. Inorganic and Nuclear Medicinal Chemistry deals with the inorganic drug molecules for the treatment of several disease conditions, while nuclear chemistry deals with the chemistry of radiopharmaceuticals, their production, preparation, compounding, quality control and use of radio nuclides as diagnostic aid or as a therapeutic agent. Organic Chemistry forms the basis of medicinal chemistry and it includes the fundamental chemistry of the various functional groups as well as stereochemistry and the chemistry of heterocyclic molecules. Medicinal Chemistry deals with different sources of drugs, mechanism of action, synthetic route and pharmacokinetic properties of present day drugs. It also covers combinatorial chemistry and computational chemistry which includes the theoretical aspects of drug designing that is 2D and 3D-QSAR, molecular modeling, docking studies and virtual screening.

A good imagination and persistence are the two important qualities Pharmaceutical chemists must possess. Since Pharmaceutical chemists are team player in drug discovery process, they must possess good written and verbal communication skills which are invaluable assets when interacting with scientists from other disciplines. The fact that their work helps to improve human health and reduce suffering is a strong motivating factor for chemists.
